如今,要进入一所名列前茅的学校,需要的不仅仅是令人眼前一亮的成绩、优秀的课外活动以及社区服务的深入。专家表示:一篇精彩的文书是吸引招生官的关键。

       一篇精彩的文书是吸引招生官的关键。但很少有人知道, 每个大学对于文书主题都有自己的特定偏好,甚至于文书中还会有经常使用的特定词语。 



哈佛和斯坦福的录取文书差异

1.消极因素

      与斯坦福大学录取文书相比,哈佛大学文书中中出现的消极因素更多。例如, “cancer,” “ifficult,” “har,” 和“tough” 在 哈佛 的论文中出现的频率更高; 而 “happy,” “passion,” “better,” 和 “improve” 在 斯坦福 的论文中出现的频率更高。 

       通过进一步的语言学分析发现 哈佛文书中最常见的词语是“经验”,“社会”,“世界”,“成功”,“机会”;而在斯坦福大学,他们是“研究”,“社区”,“知识”,“未来” 和 “技能”。

2.文章内容

      这也与论文的内容有关。 在哈佛,被录取的学生倾向于写下他们在生活或学术生涯中所经历的挑战 ,而斯坦福则倾向于写一些创造性的个人故事,或者写一些关于家庭背景或学生关心的问题的文章 。从这些定性数据推断,斯坦福大学似乎对 学生的个性 更感兴趣,而哈佛似乎对学生的成就记录更感兴趣。

       这些结论给我们一个启示:一些人期望试图用一篇完美的文书,来申请多所院校,但现实是, 越是顶尖的大学,越有自己的独特偏好。

其他顶尖大学偏爱什么样的文书?

       通过数据观察得知,布朗偏爱那些写关于志愿者经历以及一些为公众利益服务的文书,而这些在耶鲁的文书中,往往是非常少见的;除了哈佛之外,普林斯顿也喜欢那些关于战胜失败的个人经历的文书;与此同时,康奈尔大学和宾夕法尼亚大学倾向于录取那些在文书中撰写自己职业理想和抱负的学生。而关于多样性的种族或性取向的文章在斯坦福、耶鲁和布朗大学更受欢迎。根据数据显示,达特茅斯学院和哥伦比亚大学似乎并没有什么特别偏爱的主题。不过,那些涉及到人生重大转变的经历似乎频繁的出现在成功申请者的文书中。



RISK-TAKING PAYS OFF (风险与机遇并存)

       那些在大学文书的内容或结构上敢于冒险尝试的学生更容易获得成功。例如,一个被几所顶尖大学录取的学生写了他父亲对色情文学上瘾 的文章,另一个学生写的是祖父母被捕入狱,母亲被迫通过非法手段获得政府救济的故事。

       这些故事,往往在我们筛选主题时已经被过滤掉了,我们视其为敏感,隐私的选题 。但是中美文化的差异也许会成为禁锢思维的樊篱,于我们而言是隐讳,在美国文化中,却是一个有趣的题材。


同样,在文章结构上创新往往也能起到出其不意的效果。

       一位成功录取者写了一篇文章,主题围绕着 追踪他的信用卡被盗后的每一笔交易,作者新颖的将“信用卡旅程 ” 的每一点作为论文的一个单独部分,并分析每笔交易的含义。

       另一篇文章则是叙述作者 最喜欢的书 ,但不同的是,作者巧妙的把重点放在这些书是在何处被购买的,把各个购买地点绘制连接为一个新地图。

       通过更多的文书,我们发现:那些成功的文书并不是简单谈论一项取得的成就或罗列学生的履历 , 最引人注目的文章是那些主题新颖而且有价值的。



       毫无疑问, 只有在文书写的很好的前提下,冒险才有意义。故事的内容和结构必须对申请者有更大的意义, 否则它不能达到目的。但是学生是否应该在论文中冒险,写一些内容大胆的文书,或者采用一种非传统的文书写作格式来吸引老师注意呢?

这是一个问题,学生需要知道 机遇是以承担风险为代价的。

不过我们可以确定的两点是:

第一, 申请者应当为不同的学校量身定制自己的论文, 而不是完善一篇论文并用它来申请每一所学校。

第二, 学生可以透过这些被录取的文书洞察学校的偏好与文化, “入学的学生的论文也反映了这些机构的社区” , 并可以通过这些来判断申请者是否适合这个学校。

美国大学通用申请系统(Common App)

美国大学通用申请系统(Common App)通过官方账号公布了2019-2020年的申请文书题目,所公布的文书题目和2018-2019的文书题目一样,打算在2019-2020年申请美国大学的同学们可以着手准备了!

通用申请(英语:Common Application,简称Common App)是美国大学本科入学网上申请的一站式网站,是包括哈佛、耶鲁、普林斯顿等名校在内的美国大学(除MIT,Georgetown和加州大学之外)都接受的通用申请系统。

据Common App官方统计: 2019申请季中最常选择的三个题目为: 第2题(21.1%)、第5题(23.7%)、第7题(24.1%)。
