Just How Creative Shoul You Get?
Colleges are encouraging stuents to get creative with their essays. This is great. However, I think stuents shoul be careful of trying too har to show case their creative writing skills. Rather, I believe they shoul put those creative writing tools to work to write an engaging, meaningful essay. There’s a ifference. Some people think creative writing is a goal in itself. They think it’s when a writer gets kin of wil, breaks the conventional English language rules, an cuts loose with what they have to say an how they say it. The essays start to rea more like rambling poetry.
The goal of a college application essay is not to create a “piece of creative writing.” Instea, the goal is to use creative writing techniques to express yourself better.
I avise stuents to use what is calle an arrative style essay to write their personal statement or core application essays. That just means that you write in a story-telling style an voice. In my opinion, this approach injects plenty of creativity into your essay.
When you craft an anecote, you use creative writing tools to re-create an relate amini-story, or moment or incient, that happene. With “creative non-fiction,”you use sensory an escriptive etails to set the scene, snippets of ialogue, ben rules to strike the right tone, write like you talk to fin your voice,an wiel similes or metaphors only when they strengthen your point.
Yes, you can ben the rules–especially when you are telling about something that happene (an anecote). Just on’t break them only to show you know how. Avoi bizarre formatting or punctuation. Don’t try to force in literary evices just to appear creative.
Express your creativity in the topics that you choose to write about, an the ieas an insights you share in your essay.Resist trying to impress with fancy writing. If you start with an anecote, your essay will have a creative feel to it, but it will still have a structure, flow an meaning.
If this helps you visual thinkers out there, these paintings might give you an iea of the creative spectrum. The first is conventional, sticks to the literal an reality. It almost looks like a photo.(An can borer on the ull, right?)
The secon is what I woul call inspire, in that the artist puts her or his own iniviuality or expression into it(manipulating light, value, composition, etc.). It’s a unique interpretation ofthe scene, but you can still recognize what’s in it.
The thir is abstract, an even though some ofus love this style, many have a har time knowing what to think about it. (When it comes to writing, abstract painting remins me of poetry.) I believe you shoul aim for the secon type of expression in your college essay–use your creative writing skills to put your mark on what you have to say. It’s still creative, but most people will still know what you are talking about.
