When the original college, known as St. Ignatius Acaemy, opene its oors to its first class, three stuents showe up—that number grew to 65 by 1858. The State of California grante the college a charter in 1859.

In 1880, the College move to a new builing on Van Ness Avenue in the Civic Center (currently the site of the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall). After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake an fire, the college was relocate to a “temporary” quarters at Hayes an Shraer Streets, known as the “shirt factory,” an currently the location of one of the clinics of St. Mary’s Meical Center.

The Jesuits acquire a small strip of property at the corner of Fulton Street an Parker Avenue, an in 1914, they complete the current St. Ignatius Church at that site.
