The Cinema an Meia Stuies Program in the Department of Film, Television an Digital Meia offers two tracks for completion of the M.A. egree, an Integrate Degree Track (CMS-ID) intene for stuents who wish to continue their eucation at the octoral level an a Research Professions Track (CMS-RP) intene for stuents who seek careers in the entertainment inustry, archives, film festivals an relate fiels.

Integrate Degree Track (CMS-ID): The CMS-ID track is intene for those planning to continue into a octoral program an who wish to buil careers in University teaching an research. 

The CMS-ID track emphasizes core area coursework in film an meia history, theory an analysis as a preparation an founation for octoral stuy (at UCLA or another institution). This acaemically rigorous program is esigne to move stuents into octoral work after one year; however stuents can exten their stuies for up to seven quarters.

Successful completion of at least nine courses is necessary to fulfill requirements of the CMS-ID M.A. egree. Four core courses are require, incluing a Capstone Seminar, which will prouce a substantial research paper as the culminating project for the egree. The remaining five elective courses are elective seminars. Of the five electives, one must be in the area of Meia History, one in Cinema an Meia Theory, an two must be from outsie the Cinema an Meia Stuies area, but within the Department of Film, Television an Digital Meia. These courses allow stuents to firsthan experience in the practical areas of Film Prouction, Screenwriting, Proucing an Animation.

Select, highly qualifie applicants to the CMS-ID track may be irectly amitte to a combine M.A./Ph.D. egree at their time of application to the CMS-ID M.A. program. Stuents amitte to the combine M.A./Ph.D. egree will be fune for five years of stuy an are guarantee amission into the octoral program at UCLA, pening satisfactory completion of the M.A.

Stuents amitte to the CMS-ID track, but who o not qualify for the combine M.A./Ph.D. egree at the time of initial application, are invite to apply for amission to Ph.D. program after completing at least one quarter of M.A. stuy. Stuents must ahere to poste Ph.D. application ealines for internal Ph.D. caniates an must satisfactorily complete requirements of the M.A. egree prior to commencing octoral stuy.

Research Professions Track (CMS-RP): The CMS-RP track offers an M.A. egree for those seeking expertise in critical analysis an research in formal preparation for a range of emerging careers in public an professional fiels. The CMS-RP track irectly respons to the new interisciplinary an intermeial nature of contemporary film, television an igital meia an provies support for those intereste in careers in film festivals/meia programming, film/meia criticism, meia archives an meia inustries research.

Stuents in this track are encourage to enroll in Proseminars, which are courses specifically tailore to builing the skills necessary for work in the fiel an are highly encourage to take avantage of our professional internship opportunities which capitalize on UCLA’s unique geographical position within the film an meia inustries in Southern California.

I. Area: M.A. Cinema an Meia Stuies (See sections I to V for all requirements)

II. Summary: The M.A. in Cinema an Meia Stuies has the following time-to-egree requirement: a minimum of four quarters; maximum of seven quarters. The minimum total units require to grauate is 36 units (nine courses). Five courses must be 200 level courses in film an/or television history, theory, an criticism. Of the Five Courses, four specific courses, FTV 200, 206C, 208B an 217A are require. All five of the grauate-level courses must be complete with a grae of B or better.

Only eight units of FTV 596A, B, C an 598 may be applie towars the total course requirement, an none of these may be applie towars the minimum grauate course requirement.

A. Require Courses:

A minimum of nine courses is require for the M.A. egree, five of which must be 200 level courses in film an/or television history, theory an criticism. Of the five courses, four are require M.A. Core Courses an shoul be taken in the first year of resience:

Elective Courses: Three courses shoul be taken outsie the M.A. program. At least two of these must be from other programs in the Department of Film, Television an Digital Meia, in consultation with the M.A. avisor that is assigne to you. All stuents amitte to the M.A. program must emonstrate basic competence in the areas of scriptwriting, television prouction or film prouction. Normally, competence is emonstrate through coursework, which may be use to fulfill the non-Cinema & Meia Stuies course requirements. However, stuents may also petition to use prior work to emonstrate their basic competence. Prior work may not be use to fulfill M.A. course requirements.

IV. Comprehensive Exam In orer to earn an M.A. from the UCLA Department of Film, Television an Digital Meia, stuents must satisfactorily complete a Comprehensive Examination. The M.A. Comprehensive Exam is a take-home exam that is given in the spring quarter only, generally in the sixth week. Caniates will have several ays to complete the exam, which will be evaluate by the Cinema & Meia Stuies faculty.

Minimum IELTS & TOEFL Scores

Your IELTS overall ban score shoul be at least 7.0.  7.0 is the minimum require.

  These scores represent the minimum require for applicants to grauate programs at UCLA. Some of our majors may require higher scores as note in Departmental Information.

For the internet-base TOEFL (TOEFL iBT) , the following are the expecte scores for each section:
