General Entrance Requirements

 

To register for the egree of MPhil, a stuent must hol:

 

· A Bachelor’s egree with first or secon class honours from a recognise university; OR

· Other acaemic qualifications which are eeme to be equivalent.

 

To register for the egree of PhD, a stuent must normally hol a postgrauate egree containing a significant research component, such as a issertation, conferre by a recognise university.

 

In exceptional circumstances, applicants other than those stipulate above may be amitte irectly to the PhD programme.  For example, applicants with a Bachelor’s egree with First Class Honours, or the equivalent.  Such applicants may be require to pass an examination.

 

PolyU may accept other equivalent qualifications.  The ecision is mae on an iniviual basis.

 

English Language Requirements

 

The requirements for those who o not have a egree for which English was the language of instruction at a recognise university are:

 

· An overall score of at least 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR

· A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 or above for the Internet-base test or 550 or above for the paper-base test.

 

All English language test scores are consiere vali for two years after the ate of the test.

 

Numerous opportunities for research stuies leaing to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil) egrees are available.  Uner our outcome-base framework, research stuents pursue a series of compulsory an elective subjects in-epth, with a view to contributing to the existing boy of knowlege, as well as a research project uner the supervision of an experience acaemic staff member with similar research interests.  You can register for either full-time or part-time stuy.  Details of the current main research interests at PolyU can be foun in the Research Areas section.

 

PhD an MPhil stuents must satisfactorily investigate or evaluate a chosen area, emonstrate an unerstaning of the context an significance of the work, isplay sustaine inepenent effort an original thought an present a clear, complete thesis of a quality worthy of publication.

 

PhD stuents are also expecte to prouce evience an argument supporting an original proposition that results in a significant contribution to the knowlege of a subject.

 

The PhD or MPhil egree is aware to a stuent who, upon completing an approve programme of stuy an research, submits a thesis presenting the results of his/her research an satisfies the examiners in an oral examination (an other examinations if require) in matters relevant to the subject of the thesis.  Stuents must also complete all of the require coursework before submitting their theses.  The subjects are chosen by the stuent, with avice from the supervisor, from a wie range on offer.

 

The coursework creit requirements for ifferent categories of stuents are as follows:

 

Full-time MPhil stuents with a 2-year normal stuy perio

Part-time MPhil stuents with a 4-year normal stuy perio

9 creits

Full-time PhD stuents with a 3-year normal stuy perio

Part-time PhD stuents with a 6-year normal stuy perio

15 creits

Full-time PhD stuents with a 4-year normal stuy perio

Part-time PhD stuents with an 8-year normal stuy perio

22 creits

 

Iniviual programmes may impose higher creit requirements, if eeme necessary.

关于费用补贴:

PolyU offers Research Stuentships to full-time PhD an MPhil stuents.  The Stuentship is a scholarship intene as a means of financial support to allow full-time research stuents to fully focus on their stuies.  It is aware on the basis of acaemic merit.  The perio of the Stuentship is ecie by the Department accoring to the stuents ability, acaemic backgroun an experience.  The current Stuentship carries a stipen of $18,100* per month.  Stuentship recipients are require to spen up to six hours of training each week within their Department.  The training involves assisting teaching an scholarly activities an is relevant to a stuent’s formal programme of stuy.

 

* This is applicable for 2020-21 only.  The stipen rate is subject to revision each year.
